Driver's License/Instruction Permit/State ID

Driver's License for All 

Effective October 1, 2023 all Minnesotans can obtain a driver's license or State ID regardless of immigration status. To get a driver's license, an applicant must prove their identity, pass the vision test, and pass the written and driving tests.

Standard Driver's License or ID card 

  • Can be used for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until May 7, 2025.
  • Starting May 7, 2025, will not be acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel or federal use. (Check with TSA for a list of other acceptable identifications)
  • Valid for identification purposes.
  • Valid for lawful driving privileges.
  • Required documents to bring for first time applicants. (All documents are subject to verification.)

Real ID driver's License or ID card 

  • Our office processes Real ID applications from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM Monday-Friday.
  • Can be used for domestic air travel and to access federal facilities such as military bases and nuclear power plants. Will be required starting May 7, 2025. (Check with TSA for a list of other acceptable identifications)
  • Issued to both U.S. and Non-U.S. citizens.
  • Cannot be used as border crossing documents.
  • Valid for identification purposes.
  • Valid for lawful driving privileges.
  • Required documents to bring for first time applicants. (All documents are subject to verification.)

Enhanced Driver's License or ID Card

  • Our office processes Enhanced applications from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM Monday-Friday.
  • Can be used for domestic air travel and to access federal facilities such as military bases and nuclear power plants. Will be required starting May 7, 2025. (Check with TSA for a list of other acceptable identifications)
  • Can be used as a cross-boarder travel document (in lieu of a passport) to re-enter the U.S. by land and sea, from Canada, Mexico, and some countries in the Caribbean.
  • Not valid for international air travel.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to qualify.
  • Valid for identification purposes.
  • Valid for lawful driving privileges.
  • Required documents to bring for first time applicants. (All documents are subject to verification.)

Note: Applicants under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian sign application for instruction permit or Driver's License. State ID applications do not require a parent's or guardian's signature.

Note: If applying for over 21 years of age Driver's License or ID you must apply within 60 days of your birth date. Credentials will not be mailed out until after your 21st birthday.

 

Driver's License or State ID Renewals

  • Save time and pre-apply online at drive.mn.gov.
  • Current Driver's License or ID card must be invalidated in our office.
  • Must take Vision and peripheral test (Driver's License/permit only).
  • Must have a photo taken
  • If you are changing the name on your Driver's License or ID, you must provide proof of name change. Required documents (All documents are subject to verification). 
  • If you have not updated your name change with the Social Security Administration, you must do so prior to applying for a Driver's License or ID.
  • If you have the Real ID/Enhanced Driver's License or ID and are changing your address you must provide two different types of proof of residency documents. Acceptable Documents (All documents are subject to verification). 

 

New Residents

  • If you are new to Minnesota and are 21 years old or older, you are no longer required to take a knowledge exam if you have a valid license in a different state. If you are under 21 years of age, you must take a knowledge exam. To schedule an exam, go to drive.mn.gov.
